The 5 Most Important Greetings in Hebrew
Greetings folks.

We are feeling great at doitinHebrew.com.
We had such a great response to the last post, The 6 Most Important Phrases in Hebrew, that we decided to bust out another one.

In the next few weeks we are going to talk about making the language your own and making it personal. That means learning words and expressions that are relevant to you and your life. After all, you’ll learn better when you are learning to talk about things that are important to you, not important to your college professor.

Today, however, we are still working on building our confidence. Therefore, I want to teach you the 5 most important Hebrew greetings.

About 13 years ago when I first started learning conversational Hebrew my first focus was greetings... “Hello”, “good morning”, “good night”, etc. I was always meeting up with people and speaking whenever I could, with anyone I could. Though I wasn’t able to use my Hebrew to chat about politics or rocket science (I can’t really do that in English either) I was able to impress them with a nice polished greeting. Once I got the greetings going I felt that I could do this. I could speak Hebrew.

Now, let’s remember that we gotta say ‘em with pride, like we own these greetings.

So here we go:

1. What’s happening?

מַה קוֹרֶה?

Mah Koreh?

2. Good morning!

!בוֹקֶר טוֹב

Boker Tov!

3. Good afternoon!

צָהָרַיִם טוֹבִים!

Tzaharayim Tovim!

4. Good evening!

עֶרֶב טוֹב!

Erev Tov!

5. Good night!

לַילָה טוֹב!

Layla Tov!

Now, these greetings work just as they do in English. For example, when you see someone in the morning you greet with “Good Morning!” - Boker tov!, but when you leave you say “See you later”- Lehitra’ot!

“Good evening”- Erev tov!, is used for the evening and night upon greeting and when you leave you’ll say “Good night” - Layla tov!.

When you greet someone don’t be caught off guard if they start speaking Hebrew, machine-gun fast. That means you said it well ;) In a future post we’ll learn how to get those Israeli speed-speakers to slow down.

Even though I tried to make this easy-shmeezy, some of you might be thinking whoah! How can I learn 5 greetings so fast? SO here is what I want you to do -- pick a couple of greetings and make a real decision that you are gonna learn ‘em.

Leave a comment below and let us know which ones you think you can handle. We will cheer you on!

See ya’ in the comments ;)
